The cross country ski season was launched with a bang with last weekend's storm. We received about 2 feet in the Truckee area, and all of the Nordic ski centers opened: Tahoe Donner Cross Country, Royal Gorge, Auburn Ski Club, Tahoe Cross Country. Coverage has been remarkably good and the snow has remained, thanks to the recent cold temperatures. It was 13 degrees F in Tahoe Donner yesterday morning, and 20 degrees this morning. The forecast calls for temps in the teens all week.
The first race of the season is set for Sunday, Dec. 16, at Auburn Ski Club. It's a duathlon: skiers race 5 kilometers classic, and then run through a transition zone and change to skating skis, and skate the same 5-k course. It's a fun race, but always means a lot of waxing.

Far West Nordic has put up a revised race schedule that reflects the lack of snow in the Sierra. The Kirkwood race on Dec. 2 was canceled and the Tannenbaum 10K Classic that was set for this Sunday has been moved to Sunday, Dec. 16. Also on that day, the Sierra Nordic Duathlon is being held at Auburn Ski Club. Let's hope the storm predicted to arrive on Thursday helps to open some of the cross country centers! I'm having West Yellowstone withdrawls.
