The cross country ski season was launched with a bang with last weekend's storm. We received about 2 feet in the Truckee area, and all of the Nordic ski centers opened: Tahoe Donner Cross Country, Royal Gorge, Auburn Ski Club, Tahoe Cross Country. Coverage has been remarkably good and the snow has remained, thanks to the recent cold temperatures. It was 13 degrees F in Tahoe Donner yesterday morning, and 20 degrees this morning. The forecast calls for temps in the teens all week.

The first race of the season is set for Sunday, Dec. 16, at Auburn Ski Club. It's a duathlon: skiers race 5 kilometers classic, and then run through a transition zone and change to skating skis, and skate the same 5-k course.
It's a fun race, but always means a lot of waxing.

Far West Nordic has put up a revised race schedule that reflects the lack of snow in the Sierra. The Kirkwood race on Dec. 2 was canceled and the Tannenbaum 10K Classic that was set for this Sunday has been moved to Sunday, Dec. 16. Also on that day, the Sierra Nordic Duathlon is being held at Auburn Ski Club. Let's hope the storm predicted to arrive on Thursday helps to open some of the cross country centers! I'm having West Yellowstone withdrawls.

Acting on blind faith and strained hope, a friend and I headed to West Yellowstone, Montana, last Monday for a weeklong Nordic ski clinic -- despite the fact that there was no snow on the ground.

Thanks to some extraordinary luck, we drove into a major snow storm Monday night that dropped 15 inches and launched the town into the ski season. The consistent cold that followed allowed the groomer to continue to set track all week and we managed to get in about five hours of skiing each day for five days straight.

The Yellowstone Ski Festival is held each year during the Thanksgiving holiday week and offers five-day, three-day and one-day clinics for cross-country skiing. We generally classic skied in the morning, when the cold temperatures made it easy to wax, and skated in the afternoon. Groups are divided by experience and each session is run by a different coach. It's a great way to start the season. I'm ready to start getting the skis waxed and tuned for the first major snow storm.

A good 6 inches fell in Tahoe Donner in Truckee overnight and the trails are packed with heavy wet snow. I ran into Euer Valley this morning and up a single track trail. I had to work hard to pick up my feet. The Firewalker trail off Sundance was tough -- breaking trail through the snow. A few more storms like this and they can get the groomers out!

Cooler temperatures. Shorter days. It's time to think about skiing. Training centers are starting to post their clinics for the cross country ski season, and Far West Nordic has posted the race schedule, so it's time to get in shape. I'll be posting events and clinics as they come up, so stay tuned.
Next week, on Wednesday, Oct. 3, the Tahoe Center for Health and Sports Performance in Truckee is hosting a "Train Smarter, Ski Faster" lecture in understanding the physiology behind training in heart rate zones. It will be presented by exercise physiologist Colleen Conners-Pace, and run from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Call530-587-3769 for details or directions.
